A Calendar for Dash

Trying to teach a preschooler the concept of days and weeks is hard. (Last week, out of the blue, Dash told me he would rather take his bath on "Tuesday." It was a Thursday, so whether he is a genius or just a lucky guesser, I'm not sure...)

But for a family who follows a strict 24-on/48-off fire department schedule, the feat is even more challenging. Just about every morning before he gets out of bed, Dash asks, "Mommy, you go to work today?" or "Is Daddy home?"

Now with Dash and Tad starting day school next week (our babysitter for 2+ years has finished her school and is moving into the classroom), I decided a calendar could help Dash keep track of what's happening each day.

For instance, there is a firetruck on every day that Daddy goes to work and a backpack on every day Dash goes to school. We'll even mark trips/events, holidays, and of course birthdays with a special picture.

Even better is that I got this idea after the school teacher's items were on sale at Michael's. I scored an entire calendar/bulletin board set for $6! Of course, I am not using everything included, but I did keep out the "The Weather Is" piece. I figure that may be fun, especially as we move into fall (ok, fall-ish) and winter temperatures.

What do you think? Any other ideas of simple ways to teach kids at home? (I'm having fun brining out my "inner-teacher"!)

I think this is awesome! Unfortunately I think Jax would find a way to destroy it...
